I like solving new problems.
I have a background in science, and have had the good fortune to be a part of building the enterprise of DNA barcoding from early days in a single lab, to a truly global effort (see iBOL and BOLD Systems for more).
I've since spent a number of years running my own web development business, starting with simple problems in web-based marketing to building applications that support business operations.
I'm currently focused on honing techniques and strategies for tackling big problems at scale through web-based technologies. Oh, and I'm also passionate about raising a family.
This is my web development business, going on 8 years. I've done a number of public-facing sites etc during this time, but my focus the last few years has been on internal web apps for businesses.
This side project with a partner has included a few consulting roles in the area of science education and educational publishing. Then we both started families.
I've got a few pieces of code written that are open. I'm working to release some other private work soon, but much is locked up in client projects.
I'm currently re-focusing my attention to build a newer consulting and development business targeted specifically at cloud-oriented development for data-driven services. On account of expanding my family, this is on hold for the moment.
I'm a terribly irregular blogger at best. I've recently dismantled my Ghost blog and am moving over to Medium. I probably won't move over much past material, it doesn't seem that interesting to me anymore. I will be focusing on what I see as emerging trends in science and tech. And then, you know, whatever else seems like a good idea at the time.
In broad strokes, the roles I've played in the past 17 years or so are heavily weighted towards web programming and multimedia development, but also include a focus on data management and communications as extensions of my education background in science.

or third-party arrangements
- Have managed subcontractors on both a per-project and ongoing basis
- A selection of past clients includes: Aecon, Angus Reid Opinion, Biodiversity Institute of Ontario,
Business Improvement Group, City of Kitchener, GES Canada, Innovative Steam Technologies,
International Barcode of Life Initiative, Machteld Faas Xander, SHOWTECH, University of Guelph, Winmar Guelph.
- Coordinated outreach with international DNA barcoding research community
- Coordinated visits from international scientists and researchers
- Facilitated training of visiting researchers to the Biodiversity Institute of Ontario
- Ongoing involvement in websites developed in my previous roles with this organization
- Developed strategy for four-year equipment budget for digital imaging labs and multimedia production
- Design and implementation of a system for acquiring and managing high quality digital images for specimens at a target rate of >100,000 specimens per year
- Lead development of standards and standard operating procedures for digital imaging of biological specimens (E-types) for eventual recommendation and distribution to wider scientific community
- Developed intranet-based database tools for managing imaging workflows
- Managed configuration and final installation of visualization centre (multimedia theatre) for hosting
interactive digital presentations, including video conferencing
- Developed and managed a program for the distribution of methodological advances from the
Canadian Centre for DNA Barcoding (a unit within the Institute)
- Lead branding campaign for the Institute, including continued design and development of several
websites and additional printed communications
- Extensive communication with members of the scientific community
- Developed and managed a web-based system of information distribution across a number of partner websites
- Lead branding campaign for national network, including design and management of website development
- Production of resource and instructional material for scientific research community
- Developed presentations for varied audiences, including academic, government, and public
- Designed and implemented a system for the acquisition and tracking of both tissue samples and data international collaborations
- Implemented a network solution for data management and protection
- Negotiated long-term commitments with suppliers of laboratory consumables
- Lead branding campaign for the Institute, including the design and development of several websites and additional printed materials
- Primary products were educational websites and CD-ROMs for clients in veterinary medicine and pharmaceutical industry
- Assumed lead on several projects – assessing client needs and vision, proposing solutions
- Experienced in graphical design, functional layout, and storyboarding of interactive learning products
- Extensive mastery of software packages for digital media
- Composed content for award-winning educational websites

basicI don't have much portfolio work prepared at the moment. The Threestone Studios website hasn't been updated since late 2012. Any work there is typically public-facing website work, with design typical of 2010-2012.
Most of my work from about 2011 to the present has been work on internal web applications supporting business operations. I will put some examples together (properly scrubbed where business data is concerned) and present some here in the future, but no examples are currently available on my existing (and very outdated) Threestone Studios website.
